If you want to play all the newest games at their highest visual resolution it will cost you a pretty penny but it’s entirely possible to purchase a solid laptop that will allow you to play all of these games with slightly reduced graphics and still be able to do everything else you need to do with ease. Technology gets cheaper all the time and these days there are several pretty good laptops you can buy for gaming without spending more than $1,000.
Scan 3XS Graphite LG156
All right, it’s heavy enough that it probably won’t leave the house very often, but the Scan 3XS Graphite LG156 is quite an impressive beast featuring technology that would have easily cost $300-400 more a couple of years ago. The nVidia GTX 860 graphics card provides an excellent gaming experience for almost all games and a powerful i7 Intel Core processor that allows you to run even the most recent games smoothly.
The only real drawback of this powerful machine is that it isn’t very nice to look at. The exterior looks pretty clunky and doesn’t have any of the glowing extras brands like Alienware are known for. It’s also an impressive 2.7kg, making it more useful for switching rooms in the house than for going out.
Still, you’d be hard pressed to find a better deal than this machine, regularly sold at $899 new. If you want a good gaming experience without spending a fortune the Scan 3XS Graphig LG156 is the laptop for you.
Chillblast Defiant 2 Mini
If you could choose a custom graphics card to go with this laptop it would be one of the best laptops gamers can buy. It features a Haswell Core i7 processor and a GTX 860 graphics card that allows you to game full speed at all but the maximum graphics settings of the latest games.
The Chillblast Defiant 2 Mini is also incredibly portable compared to other gaming laptops in the same price range. It’s a little bit chunky at 32mm thick but the 2.1kg weight makes it far more practical for the road than most of the competition. It also features a full five and a half hours of battery life even with constant video streaming or gaming, making this an excellent laptop to take on the road with you.
The one big drawback of this laptop is the mediocre speakers, but that’s not a big drawback if you tend to play with head phones anyway. If you don’t already have a good pair they’re a worthwhile investment, particularly for gaming when you’re on trains or airplanes.
At $899 the Chillblast Defiant 2 Mini is an excellent deal for a gamer on a budget.
The HP Pavilion TouchSmart is a definite downgrade from the Chillblast Defiant 2 Mini, boasting only a 740M graphics card, but it’s still got a strong enough i5 processor to run most games smoothly on a lower resolution and the brightly coloured screen boasts excellent viewing at all angles. The keyboard is also quite comfortable for actual office work and this computer is excellent for all office purposes.
Unfortunately the speakers on this computer lack bass and are quite tinny, but they’re able to go quite loud so they’re excellent for watching movies or playing video games without overly dramatic, essential soundtracks.
Still, at the recently-dropped price of $500, this is one excellent deal for a gamer on a budget.
It’s definitely not the most impressive laptop on this list but the Asus X552CL has surprisingly good gaming capabilities for a laptop that costs less than $500. The nVidia GeForce GT 710M provides an impressive graphics boost that makes 3D gaming possible and sets it apart from other laptops in the same price range.
This laptop is quite well built for something in the $500 price range and features a wonderfully spacious keyboard and trackpad you’ll love, especially when you need to actually get some work done on this computer.
