LCD Monitor Buying Guide
Before buying the Asus MX239H, read our short buyers guide.
When buying a personal desktop computer we always think of high-end components and neglect the value of the monitor we get in the process. A monitor must be one of our top priorities since that will be staring at it every time we use the computer. You might think that LCD monitors are the same in general, but they are not. There are many things to consider when buying a monitor but all will depend on how you will be using it either for work, play or both. So before you rush to the store and buy the most expensive monitor available, here are things you need to understand first.
Older versions of LCD monitors use a fluorescent lamp to light up the screen. You may sometimes find them at a very low price which can be very tempting if you are on a budget. These old monitors may be a good option but there are some disadvantages. One downside is that, the fluorescent lamp on these monitors has a low lifespan and cannot produce enough light to enhance the contrast or deliver a sharper image. Also, the light distribution throughout the LCD screen is not consistent and you will notice uneven brightness especially in the corners.
Now, new models of LCD monitors are equipped with LED backlight that produces sharper images and even light distribution on all parts of the screen. LED are also very power efficient and can last a very long time. If you are concerned with saving energy, then you must consider getting a LCD monitor with LED backlight.
Another thing to consider is the size of the monitor. If you are doing just minimal work like editing text documents, then a 16 to 20 inch monitor is sufficient enough for your needs. However, if are using your computer as a media to stream movies or play intensive graphic games, then the size you need is at least 22 inches.
At this size, you will be able to enjoy 1080p Full HD movies at the best detail possible. For gamers, the size is important but so does the response time of the LCD monitor. The lower the response time of the monitor, the better the gaming experience will be.
Connectivity between the monitor and the PC is also important. Old models of LCD monitors use a VGA plug while newer ones use an HDMI connection. Though there are VGA to HDMI plug adaptors for compatibility, there is a big difference in performance. LCD monitors with VGA connection has a lower screen resolution and refresh rate while the HDMI has a higher one and support for multiple large monitors.
Now that you know what to look for in a LCD monitor, you can get the one you need without getting confused of the additional features. Lastly, consider a well-known and reputable brand and choose the one that offers a longer warranty period for better assurance that you get a good quality product.
